Foundational Reading Skills

Mastering foundational reading skills is the first step towards literacy. We focus on the essential components of reading, starting from letter recognition to understanding complex texts. Key areas include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills.

Our program ensures a thorough understanding of these foundational elements, setting the stage for successful reading and writing. Tailored activities and exercises are incorporated to reinforce each skill. This holistic approach lays a solid groundwork for a lifetime of reading.

Beginning Letters and Sounds

Diving into the world of letters and sounds marks the start of an exciting learning adventure. We introduce children to the alphabet and the unique sounds each letter makes. This foundational knowledge is crucial for reading and spelling success.

Our engaging teaching methods make this early learning process enjoyable and effective. By mastering these basics, children gain the confidence to progress in their literacy journey. The focus is on nurturing a strong and positive start to reading.

Reading Readiness

Preparing for reading is an exciting phase in a child's educational journey. We assess and build upon essential pre-reading skills such as letter recognition and basic word understanding. These skills are vital in setting a strong foundation for future reading success.

Our program is tailored to nurture a love for reading right from the start. Interactive and enjoyable activities ensure that children are engaged and excited about learning. Emphasis is placed on building a solid base for further reading development.

Phonemic Awareness

Cultivating phonemic awareness is a key step in developing reading proficiency. We teach children to recognize and manipulate the individual sounds in words. This ability is critical for reading and spelling accuracy.

Our engaging and interactive approach makes learning these skills fun and effective. Exercises are designed to strengthen auditory processing skills, crucial for reading development. This foundation is essential for successful phonics instruction and overall literacy.

Phonics

Phonics instruction is a critical component of our literacy program. We teach children how to connect letters with sounds and blend them into words. This skill is essential for reading fluency and comprehension.

Our phonics instruction is interactive and multisensory, ensuring students understand and retain the concepts. We focus on building a strong phonetic base, enabling children to decode words efficiently. This approach lays the groundwork for confident and capable reading.

Fluency

Building fluency is a fundamental goal of our reading program. We work on enhancing the speed, accuracy, and expression in reading. Our methods include guided practice and repeated reading of texts.

This approach helps students become more confident and efficient readers. Emphasis is placed on smooth and expressive reading, which is key to enjoying literature. Fluency is a critical skill for understanding and enjoying reading.

Vocabulary

Expanding vocabulary is a vital part of reading comprehension. We introduce new words in meaningful contexts to enhance understanding and retention. Our program includes a wide range of words, appropriate for different age groups and reading levels.

Engaging activities and diverse materials are used to enrich students' language skills. This broadens their linguistic abilities and aids in better understanding of texts. A rich vocabulary is instrumental in developing strong reading and communication skills.

Comprehension

Enhancing reading comprehension is the ultimate aim of our program. We teach students to understand, interpret, and analyze texts. Strategies like predicting, questioning, and summarizing are emphasized.

These skills are crucial for grasping the meaning behind the words. Our approach ensures that students not only read but also understand and engage with the text. Comprehension is key to effective reading and lifelong learning.

Writing/Grammar

Integrating writing and grammar with reading enhances overall literacy. We focus on sentence structure, punctuation, and creative expression. Our approach ensures that students can effectively communicate their ideas in writing.

This reinforces their reading skills and promotes a well-rounded language education. Emphasis is on developing clear and coherent writing abilities. This integration is crucial for a complete understanding of the language arts.

Transforming Education

Mrs. Farmer, the founder of Gifted Apples, started her first tutoring program in 1991, founded SchoolRoom Professional Tutors Learning Center in 1994 and founded Shaker East Academy in 2005. Realizing that one-on-one instruction for individual students was not cost-effective for school districts, especially large, urban districts, Mrs. Farmer’s early vision was to provide individualized tutoring to students who required one-on-one instruction due to an Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADD-H) diagnosis. All of Mrs. Farmer’s students had a diagnosis of a learning disability with other comorbidities (i.e., ADD/ADD-H, dyslexia, and executive function ‘behavioral’ deficit) as well.

One-to-one, individualized, or even small group instruction of 6 to 8 students is challenging for classroom teachers who may have 15 to 26+ students in their class. Special education teachers may have up to 15 students in a resource learning class.

Gifted Apples’ licensed and certified teachers provide intensive one-on-one intervention to children in grades PreK–3, Late Elementary Grades 4–7, and Middle and High School. Contact us today to get started.

The Gift of Success

Gifted Apples was established in 2015, drawing from Mrs. Farmer's background as a principal and teacher, along with her professional development. Children with reading and learning difficulties will be more successful at catching up with grade-level work rather than falling farther and further behind if help is given early. Best practices require an early start to reading instruction and intervention. Research and evidence-based methods of giving kids systematic and explicit instruction using multisensory instruction (i.e., visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile) continue to be supported by research. Due to their struggles with reading and learning, the student with significant reading and learning disabilities may have gotten angry or even depressed since they perceive themselves as successful in school while receiving bad or failing grades in the majority of their classes and performing worse academically than their peers.

By the time students get to the fourth and fifth grade, learning becomes more difficult at every grade level and in every subject area course where integrated reading is required due to their experiences with reading, the reading process, and trying to understand what is read or heard. Concern arises from the fact that as these pupils age, there is an increasing disparity in their academic performance since they have not acquired the knowledge needed to match the standards of their current grade level. The unpleasant feelings associated with reading and the reading process lead to limited reading experiences, or outright disinterest in reading, which is counterproductive to achieving academic achievement in school and in life. Your child's condition makes it very difficult for them to "read to learn" and "learn from reading," as seen by limited reading experiences and low enthusiasm to read.
